Sept 11, 2014 and a fireman remembers

So a quick amazing story.  

    Sept 11, 2011, a twin tower beam came through Richmond Indiana on it’s way to Indianapolis, while almost 12,500 motorcycles escorted the beams to their new resting place as a historical monument.

   As a photographer, I wanted to record this historical event, taking place here in Richmond, IN.  I recorded the whole event with a long lens, wide angle len, with an umbrella wedge through my pant leg to hold it up while a ran a camcorder with my left hand.

I didn’t stop recording until 10 minutes before the last bikes left the city of Richmond.

By then I was frozen for I had not dressed for rain. 

    This week, I got a call from a fireman named Scott.  He remembered the display of photos, and the photographic journal I wrote, I titled, “Richmond Rides to Remember”  For his own personal reasons, he looked me up and we reconnected, he was in the book and wanted it for his kids. I had only met him through the lens of my camera but I remembered him.  

   He remembered being in the book and wanted a copy.  We spent today talking about the day the beams came through Richmond and that he wanted memorabilia, as well,  for his children, so they would remember that important day.  His daughter was by his side when I took the photo of him. 

     As we were looking at the photos from “Richmond Rides to Remember” he saw my Primex fire photos, this happened to be his first “run” as a younger fireman.  Amazingly it was my first photographic competition piece with the Indiana Professional Photographers Association. I scored well, and merited.  He did great and is still a dedicated fireman.  He bought my first competition piece to remember his first big fire run. As he was paying for his photos he asked me if I knew today's date.  He said, "When he woke up and heard today Sept 11, 2014, he thought to himself, what were the odds finding the photographer that wrote this book, and that our schedules coming together today, as we viewd the photos from “Richmond Rides to Remember” 3 years later?
